JBoss Founder Marc Fleury Joins Appcelerator Board of Advisors
ATLANTA―December 12, 2007―Marc Fleury, founder and former chief executive of open source middleware leader JBoss, Inc., has joined the advisory board of Appcelerator, Inc. The company, which provides open source software for rapid rich Internet application (RIA) development, is quickly scaling up operations and product development to support the growing demand for next-generation Web development solutions. The Appcelerator Platform, the company’s open source, next-generation Web platform, enables developers to quickly assemble cross-platform, SOA-ready RIAs—which the company refers to as service-oriented user interfaces or “SOUIs”—using the skills and technologies they’ve already invested in to standardize their development environments and software infrastructures.
“Marc has been a collaborator and a friend for years and we’re pleased to formalize his relationship with Appcelerator,” said Jeff Haynie, the company’s chief executive. “We believe the knowledge he developed building JBoss, to the point where it quickly became a true challenger to much larger competitors and a substantial industry force, will be invaluable to Appcelerator as we look to achieve similar dominance in our pursuit of the enterprise RIA development market.”
Fleury said: “Most enterprises have been investing in service-oriented architectures for the past several years. They now want to leverage their investment by offering rich Internet applications on top of this infrastructure. Appcelerator helps development shops deliver on the promise of rapid, service-oriented UI development. The company delivers cross-platform functionality on the server side, supporting the .NET, Java, Ruby or PHP architectures. On the client side, Appcelerator RIA widgets are standards-based and portable across browsers. Finally, because it is message-based, the underlying architecture allows for mock object-based client development, cleanly separating client and server-side development efforts. I’m very excited to help a team that is so focused on solving real issues in the Web application development space—and doing so in open source.”
Fleury first released the open source JBoss Application Server in 1999. He founded JBoss Group in 2001 and incorporated JBoss, Inc. in 2004. At the time of its 2006 acquisition by Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), JBoss had grown to become the undisputed global leader in open source middleware.
This announcement follows last week’s announcement that Ben Sabrin, the first non-founder employee of JBoss, has joined the company as vice president of strategy and business development.
